Council tax is a major ongoing cost. Checking the official Valuation Office Agency (VOA) band early helps you compare streets and budgets before you offer or sign a tenancy.
Bands in England and Wales
England uses bands A–H based on 1991 values; Wales uses A–I based on 2003 values. Local authorities set a Band D charge; other bands are charged as a fixed proportion of that rate.
How to look up a band and estimate the bill
- Open the council tax calculator.
- Search the postcode and select the address to load the VOA band.
- Optionally apply a single person discount and choose 10- or 12-month payments.
- Review the estimated annual and monthly figures — then confirm with the official bill or council.
Parish precepts can leave a gap versus the estimate. The band is official where available; the £ figure is for projection only.
